Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco is a really cute multicultural story about a visit she took as a little girl to her Grandmother's farm. She is afraid of the the thunderstorm and is hiding under the bed. Her grandmother gets her to come out by suggesting they make thunder cake. The story has them collecting the ingredients and counting the time between each lightning strike and thunder claps to determine how far away the storm was. This is a good way to introduce a lesson on weather. You can also do a segment on measurements for math class.
